Bank statement to OFX

Bank statement to QIF
For Quicken, GnuCash, Moneydance, MoneyMoney and Banktivity.
OFX is the format your software already speaks
Open Financial Exchange is the standard banks use for direct-connect downloads, and almost every finance tool can read it: Xero, Wave, GnuCash, Quicken, MoneyMoney, Banktivity, Moneydance, YNAB via import, and QuickBooks through its Web Connect flavour. When a bank drops direct connect and leaves you with a PDF, an OFX export is the shortest way back to a file your software understands.
This converter reads the PDF in your browser and writes OFX 1.0.2 — the widely-supported SGML dialect, not the newer XML variant that older desktop tools reject.
The sign problem, and why it matters more in OFX
An OFX record carries a transaction type (DEBIT or CREDIT) alongside a signed amount. Get the sign wrong and you do not get a slightly odd spreadsheet — you get income recorded as spending, which surfaces at reconciliation weeks later.
Most PDF statements print withdrawals and deposits in separate columns with no minus sign, so there is nothing in the number itself to read the direction from. Where your statement carries a running balance, ConvertFin takes the signed amount from how that balance moved between rows, and shows you a badge saying whether every row agreed before you download anything. That is the same balance self-check that runs on every export.
OFX, QBO and QFX are the same file in three wrappers
- OFX is the open base format. Use it for Xero, Wave, GnuCash, MoneyMoney and Banktivity.
- QBO is OFX plus an Intuit block so QuickBooks Desktop accepts it as a Web Connect file — see bank statement to QBO.
- QFX is the Quicken flavour, which expects a paid Intuit branding identifier that third-party tools cannot issue. For Quicken, use QIF instead — it imports cleanly and needs no identifier.
Already have a file, just the wrong one?
If your bank gave you a CSV rather than a PDF, you do not need this page — the file format converters go straight from CSV to QBO, QIF or OFX without a PDF in the middle. The whole matrix is at /convert.
Private by design
The PDF is parsed locally with pdf.js and the OFX is written in the same tab. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is no account to create. You can confirm it in your browser’s Network tab while you convert — the detail is on the security page. Works with statements from most banks, provided the PDF has selectable text rather than being a scan.
Frequently asked questions
Which apps import an OFX file?
Xero, Wave, GnuCash, Quicken, MoneyMoney, Banktivity, Moneydance and most desktop finance software. QuickBooks reads the QBO flavour, which we also export.
What is the difference between OFX and QBO?
A QBO file is an OFX file with an added Intuit identification block that QuickBooks Desktop checks for before it will import. The transaction data is identical. Use the QBO export for QuickBooks and OFX for everything else.
Can I use this to make a QFX file for Quicken?
No, and neither can any third-party tool honestly. QFX requires a paid Intuit branding identifier issued to financial institutions, and Quicken rejects files without a valid one. Use the QIF export for Quicken — it imports without any identifier.
Will withdrawals be negative in the OFX?
Yes, when the statement carries a running balance. We derive the sign from how the balance moved rather than from a column heading, and the on-screen badge tells you whether every row reconciled before you download.
Does OFX 1.0.2 work with modern software?
Yes. We write the SGML 1.0.2 dialect deliberately: it is the most widely accepted version, and several older desktop tools reject the newer OFX 2.x XML form. Tools that read 2.x almost always read 1.0.2 as well.
Is my statement uploaded?
No. The PDF is read in your browser with pdf.js and the OFX is generated on your device. No file is transmitted and nothing is stored on a server.
